At Canyon Creek Kennels, we strive to be sure
our puppies are well socialized. From the time
they are born until the time you get them, they
will be held every day, petted, and played with.
This insures a bolder puppy that will take
training more easily and fit into the family.

| Prey Driving |
We prey drive all puppies on clipped-winged
pigeons and bobwhite quail. We do this from 5
to 9 weeks of age. This insures that the puppy
is bold and that they want to hunt. We only do
this for a couple of weeks as to not mess up the
pointing instinct. We also get them started
pointing a wing on a string. Puppies are taken
for walks in tall grass and cover to insure that
nothing will bother them as they grow. All this
aids in making a better trainable bird dog.

| Gunfire Conditioning |
Since we train dogs pretty much every day, the
puppies will have heard more than their fair
share of gunfire. When they are little we do not
shoot over them, but if we have them much past
8 weeks and their prey drive is up, we start
using a starter pistol. It is my belief that gunfire
conditioning is very important and should not
be hurried.

| Retrieving |
We encourage our puppies to retrieve whether
it be pop cans, pine cones, or birds. Anything
they bring to us, we praise them for it so that
later on you won't have to force fetch them.

Diet is a very important part of a puppy's life.
This includes what his mother eats. We feed
what we feel is the best, Black Gold. Mothers
are also given vitamin and mineral
supplements during pregnancy and nursing.
Pups are fed puppy food until 6 months of age
and then moved to adult food. This keeps the
puppies from growing too fast.
Puppies are wormed every two weeks starting
at 4 weeks old, until 3 months of age. After that
we go to once a month until 6 months old. Adult
dogs are wormed every 3 months.
Vaccinations are given starting at 6 weeks of
age, and once a month after that for a three
shot series. All breed stock is vaccinated
against parvo and distemper before breeding.
